Crafting a Scandinavian Christmas wreath
With the first snow, we're slowly getting into Christmas mood, and for that reason, we've come up with a simple yet effective DIY from the garden/nature for you. With the instructions below on how to make a mossy Christmas wreath, you'll certainly manage it without any floristry experience.
Moss rings are a typical Scandinavian base for Christmas wreaths because there's plenty of moss that can be gathered in the forests. You can also collect spruce branches in the forest; alternatively, you can buy them at most flower shops during Christmastime. But I think it's also nice to just hang up the simple moss ring without any further decorations or branches added. Then it's just a simple but effective and sophisticated Christmas wreath.
DIY Moss Ring for a Christmas Wreath
Materials:
Moss (available from the forest or a flower shop)
Wire ring (available at craft stores or garden centers)
Floral wire
Garden shears
Christmas decorations as you like
A leather or velvet ribbon to hang up the wreath
How to make it
Prepare the Moss:
Collect fresh moss from the forest or purchase it from a flower shop. Ensure the moss is clean and free from impurities. Thoroughly rinse it to remove loose soil and small twigs, then allow it to drain well or pat it dry with a clean towel.
Prepare the Wire Ring:
Purchase or shape a wire ring to your desired size. You can also bend simple wire into a ring, securely connecting the ends.
Attach the Moss:
Cut the moss into manageable pieces. Wrap them around the wire ring, securing with floral wire. Ensure even distribution and a firm attachment.
Continue and Shape:
Repeat until the entire ring is covered. Gently press the moss for good adhesion, then shape the ring for a uniform, appealing form.
Allow to Dry:
et the moss ring dry completely in a dry place before decorating for Christmas. Now you have a natural, handmade base for your wreath.
Decoration (Optional):
Add spruce branches, berries, pinecones, or small ornaments as desired, securing them with floral wire. I love decorating just half the wreath, as shown in the picture. Enjoy!
